NHL Calder Trophy Odds: Wolf Is Real Calder Value

NHL Calder Trophy Odds: Wolf Is Real Calder Value

Macklin Celebrini is starting to run away with the 2025 NHL Calder Trophy odds. The Sharks’ young stud is now -280 at the top of the Calder odds, with Lane Hutson (+450) and Matvei Michkov (+600) sitting just behind.

I think there’s some value down the board in a guy like Dustin Wolf, though:

2024-25 Calder Trophy Favorite: Macklin Celebrini

With 42 points in 48 games, Celebrini is only two points back of the rookie scoring lead but sits first among all rookies for points per game. That scoring rate is going to be key for Celebrini’s Calder credentials. The Sharks’ first overall pick from a year ago has missed a handful of games, playing only those 39 compared to 48 like Calder challenger Hutson but is technically more productive.

Playing on a line with Willaim Eklund and Tyler Toffoli has helped round out last year’s first-overall draft pick into an offensive force, giving him steady pillars on the wing to build out his game at the pro level. Should he continue to score near a point-per-game pace, he’ll be a strong contender for the Calder.

2024-25 Calder Trophy Odds Value Pick: Dustin Wolf

I still think Dustin Wolf has a path to this Calder. Celebrini, Michkov, and Hutson are all putting up massive offensive seasons, but Wolf has been the best young goalie in the league by far.

With his 20-12-3 record and .913 save percentage, Wolf has almost single-handedly pulled the Flames into postseason competition. Wolf is the ONLY rookie goalie (min 12 games started) with a save percentage over .900. He’s got a better save percentage than Jacob Markstrom, Linus Ullmark, and Jake Oettinger — all top tier NHL starting goalies on far better teams than Wolf’s Flames.

At first glance, Wolf’s statistics are merely good, not great. But, league-wide NHL save percentage is the lowest it’s been since 2006 (.901), so Wolf’s .913 mark is actually fantastic. If voters recognize how good of a goalie he’s been, Wolf is great Calder value at FanDuel.

Last 10 Calder Trophy Winners

Last 10 Calder Trophy Winners
Year Player Opening Odds
2024 Connor Bedard (CHI) -135
2023 Matty Beniers (SEA) +400
2022 Moritz Seider (DET) +1200
2021 Kirill Kaprizov (MIN) +400
2020 Cale Makar (COL) +400
2019 Elias Pettersson (VAN) +240
2018 Mathew Barzal (NYI) +1800
2017 Auston Matthews (TOR) -130
2016 Artemi Panarin (CHI) +2200
2015 Aaron Ekblad (FLA) +700

It’s always great to look back on a list like this and see just how many of these players turned into absolute superstars – there’s a noticeable lack of Connor McDavid thanks to him only playing 45 games in his rookie year due to injury.

The teams are always fresh too, with no squad winning a back-to-back Calder since the Boston Bruins in 1967 and 1968.

NHL Teams with the Most Calder Trophy winners

most Calder Trophy Wins by Team
Team # Calder Trophies Won Most Recent Winner
Toronto Maple Leafs 10 Auston Matthews (C) – 2017
Chicago Blackhawks 9 Artemi Panarin (LW) – 2016
New York Rangers 8 Brian Leetch (D) – 1989
Boston Bruins 8 Andrew Raycroft (G) – 2004
Montreal Canadiens 6 Ken Dryden (G) – 1972
Detroit Red Wings 6 Moritz Seider (D) – 2022
New York Islanders 5 Mathew Barzal (RW) – 2018
Colorado Avalanche 4 Cale Makar (D) – 2020

Auston Matthews’ 2017 win snapped quite the cold streak for the Leafs, going 51 years without a Calder win – their wins come from the early days of the NHL. You’ll notice the top six teams are the Original Six squads, owing to their high wins to being around the longest you could assume.

NHL Teams that have never had a player win the Calder Trophy

These are all relatively “newer” teams, with the Flyers and Stars being the oldest squads on this list after joining in the 60s. With Michkov (Philadelphia) and Stankoven (Dallas) at the top of the 2024-25 Calder Trophy odds board, maybe one of those two franchises finally gets their first Calder winner.

Calder Trophy Betting Trends

With a collection of potential superstars at the start of every season, you need all the stats you can get when trying to predict the next Calder winner. The results can be shocking with early picks winding up as busts or late selections making themselves the best players in their age category. Here are a few trends over the last few seasons that might indicate who’ll take home the Calder:

  • Three out of ten of the most recent winners were defensemen, and while that isn’t a high number, it does show the award is open to any skater skilled enough to take it.
  • 50% of the last decade’s winners have been centers, giving their role a slight edge in the Calder race.
  • Steve Mason was the last goaltender to win the Calder in 2009, meaning goalies rarely get any love with this award.
