The cost of attending an English Premiership rugby match

New findings show the most expensive away days for English rugby union fans.

New research from the Betway team has revealed the cost of attending an English Rugby Union match as an away supporter.

The research calculates the sum of accommodation expenses, the price of local fast food, the cost of local transport links and the price of a terrace match ticket.

The findings offer a comprehensive view of the financial commitment required for rugby fans traveling to away games, covering not just the cost of tickets but the entire experience.

The average away supporter can expect to spend significantly more than just the ticket price, with travel and food expenses often adding up quickly.

For many fans, these additional costs can be a barrier, particularly for those who must travel long distances or make overnight stays in cities like London.

Two London Clubs – Harlequins (£219.60) and Saracens (£161.60) – both rank in the top three as a result, while Bath is the second most expensive away-day with the total cost coming to £210.

The research also shows that Bath charges the most for a terrace ticket, with behind-the-posts adult tickets listed at £60.

There are regional differences in costs, with some areas proving far more expensive for away supporters due to higher accommodation prices or limited public transport options.

Newcastle, for example, is the best value away trip when it comes to Premiership Rugby. Accommodation for one night is in the region of £90 and a terrace ticket is a very reasonable £22.75.

When food and transport is also considered, a Falcons away-day comes to just £124.55.

Methodology

‘Travel expenses’ refers to two-way local transport within the listed city or town, ‘Food’ refers to the average fast food in each location, ‘Hotel’ refers to the average of a one-night stay in the listed places and ‘Ticket’ refers to the price of an adult terrace ticket for a domestic fixture.

These numbers – sourced from Numbeo, Statistica and official club websites – were then added together to find the total expense facing English rugby supporters for a one-night away trip.
